Environmentalists For Nuclear Energy

21st October 2004

Japan and invitation to the Annual Meeting of EFN and EFN-USA on Saturday, December 4th, 2004 at 5:00 PM

This newsletter is archived and made available to the public on the website of EFN: http://www.ecolo.org/archives/archives-nuc-en/

Dear friends of clean nuclear energy,

First of all, a few words about our recent lectures in Japan. The president of EFN was in Japan between October 24th and November 1st, 2004, to give a press conference in Tokyo and several lectures in different cities around the country.

Everything went well, thanks to the perfect local organization. The press conference in Tokyo as well as the three lectures which followed were a great success. About 20 journalists came to the press conference on October 25th (although at the same moment many of them were under pressure to cover the earthquakes in Western Japan).

The public lecture which was held in Marion Hall in Tokyo on the next day attracted almost 500 participants. The President of EFN was the main speaker of the "nuclear energy day". It was the 20th anniversary of this public event which is held each year since 1964 in Japan on October 26th, to celebrate the first operation of the first Japanese nuclear power plant that produced electricity for the first time in Japan on October 26th, 1963. It was a great honor for us to give a key-note speech of more than one hour on this occasion. This event was very successful, the large conference room was almost full, and was followed by several other lectures in Japanese provinces.

EFN gave an important symbolic lecture in Hiroshima. About 200 local citizens participated in this lecture which was given in the highly symbolic conference room located just next to the Peace Memorial Museum of Hiroshima.

Then EFN gave another lecture in Ao Mori City which also attracted about 200 participants. The conference room was full and the event was once again successfull thanks to the perfect organization of our local correspondents.

Ao Mori is located in the Northern part of Japan, close to Rokkasho Mura where is located the Japanese nuclear reprocessing plant (similar to the La Hague plant in France or Sellafield in the UK) which is about to start its commercial operations. The President of EFN officially met in Ao Mori (in presence of the media) the Vice Governor of the Province of Ao Mori, for a discussion about energy, the protection of the environment, and the reprocessing of nuclear waste. The Vice-Governor congratulated EFN for its action, and approved our activities (the Gouvernor was travelling overseas at that moment).

You can download the slides of these lectures in PPT format on EFN's web site, in English and in Japanese (6,9 Mb), as well as the special statement of EFN given in introduction to the presentation in Hiroshima (3 ko) at: http://www.ecolo.org/conferences/some_conferences/speech_japan_04/

Several press articles have been published (and several other articles are under print):

The Daily Tohoku of 31 October 2004 reported that "Nuclear energy is clean" and that "The story of Leukemia in La Hague was finally a big hoax" click here to see this article (original edition in Japanese, PDF format, 212 ko)

To-o Nippo of 31 October 2004 reported that "Only nuclear energy meet the vast requirements of energy and the greenhouse gas issue" click here to see this article (original edition in Japanese, PDF format, 164 ko).

The events and lectures organized in the same area of Ao Mori on the following days by Greenpeace with the intention of propagating in Japan the big hoax of leukemia clusters caused (according to GP) by artificial radioactivity around Sellafield and La Hague seem to have been a flop and did not meet the success that they expected.

EFN wishes a rapid start and a long life to the Rokkasho Mura reprocessing plant which is clean and highly ecological plant, based on the CONFINEMENT (not the rejection) of nuclear waste. This plant will reprocess the Japanese spent nuclear fuel. Such reprocessing is essential for the sustainable future of clean nuclear energy.
